I have been representing clients who have lost their driving privileges in Illinois, around the Schaumburg and Chicago areas, for over 18 years. People have often asked me what steps do they have to take to have their drivers license reinstated after they received a statutory summary suspension.
To have driving privileges reinstated, other suspensions or revocations on the driving record must be closed. Then a $250 reinstatement fee must be paid to the Secretary of State, unless you are a repeat offender, which requires you to pay a $500 reinstatement fee to the Secretary of State instead. The reinstatement of a statutory summary suspension does not become valid until it is entered on the driver's record in the Secretary of State's office provided the provisional termination date has passed.
Don't make the mistake of having a statutory summary suspension on your record but not paying the reinstatement fee after the suspension was supposed to end. State prosecutors will typically be very aggressive in prosecuting driving while license suspended cases while the suspension was based off of a driving under the influence of alcohol charge.
