As a license reinstatement lawyer in the State of Illinois, I have been contacted by dozens of clients in the past two weeks regarding their attempts to reinstate their Illinois drivers license. Many of these clients have been driving legally in California, Florida, Texas, and various other states for several years. When these people attempt to renew their drivers license in their home state they are refused due to the fact that there is a hold on their Illinois drivers license. When they first call me, many of them indicate that they want to fill in the out-of-state application. I would not recommend this. Why? Because the rate of success in attempting to renew your Illinois drivers license with the out-of-state hearing application is much lower than going to a hearing in person in Illinois.
My success rate for getting people back their drivers licenses from out-of-state in the past 10 years has been the greater than 98%. Contrast this to what I believe to be a 15% success rate at out-of-state hearing applications. I do not perform or even help clients mail in the out-of-state written application. Most of my clients expect success and my advice is that if you want your license clear, make arrangements to come to the state of Illinois for an in person hearing through a license reinstatement lawyer.
